The Phenomena That is Bingo

If there is one gambling game in the world that is fun, lucrative and cheap, it is Bingo. The popularity of bingo is doesn't seem to fade and it is an internationally accepted form of gaming that both young and old appreciate and enjoy.

What makes bingo so special are the simplicity of the game and the many ways to enjoy and profit from it. In places or cities that prohibit gambling, bingo is commonly found. The game is also a popular fund raising project in churches and local communities. Playing the game starts when a player purchases his cards; the cards are divided into blank and numbered squares.

The numbers are chosen randomly from a collection of up to 75 or 90 numbers, are these are called out or announced by a banker. A player who first completes a straight line on one of his cards with the numbers that have been called shouts Bingo. The winning card is then surrendered for inspection and the player claims the prize at stake. Normally the cash collected is not up for stake entirely, a small percentage is usually deducted.

Another famous variation of bingo is that the center square on the card is for free and the very first player who gets five of the called out numbers on his card appear in either a diagonal, horizontal or vertical line is the winner. The prize money may even amount to thousands of dollars for this type of bingo game.

The earliest recorded form of bingo game was in 1778. In the early 19th century, the original American form of bingo was called kino, po-keno or keno; the variation of names depends on the locality. Bingo became more popular during the time of the Great Depression in the 1930's. The popular variant of the bingo game named Screeno was usually played in movie theaters. There is even a designated one-night-a-week bank night game where movie goers get free bingo cards with their movie tickets. Prizes come in cash or merchandise which amount to hundreds of dollars.

Nowadays, bingo is still one of the favorite pass times and gambling games of young and old. Bingo gaming also comes in non-gambling forms such as in board games that are meant for children. Bingo games in churches, communities and certain organizations are still prevalent and still helping to raise funds for charity purposes.

Bingo is still going strong after more than two hundred years. There is no sign of stopping, for this game has found its place on the realm of live and online gaming.
